England boccia player Lee Maddison tells us why his mum, Jill, has been so important to him in his boccia career.

My Mam has supported me right from the beginning of my boccia career.

When I left for residential college at 18, my boccia career fell away and I lost my place on the England squad.

My Mam, alongside my Grandad, decided to take the reins and build me back up by becoming my on-court assistant. Together, we built everything back up and we medalled at our first competition.

From there I got reselected for England, representing our country in the Czech Republic, Holland, Vienna, and Slovakia.

I unfortunately got deselected again.

My Mam stepped down from being my on-court assistant to became my coach and mentor, and as a team we built me back up again and got me reselected for a third time.

I haven’t looked back since.
